Dubai is synonymous with innovation and skyscrapers. But the desert outside of the city is just as spectacular as the city itself. A particularly beautiful area is the Dubai Desert Reserve. The towering dunes of rust colored sand flow for hundreds of miles. However, if you want to explore this part of Dubai you have to choose wisely.
In order to regulate the traffic in the reserve, only a select few companies are allowed to run tours. We booked with Lama Tours.
The tour starts with a heart-racing “dune-bashing” ride. The high performance SUV and the serious skills of the drivers equate to a fun and bumpy ride. I will not lie – there were a few times I thought the vehicle might flip. We all screamed (including Mike) in excitement and worry.
The entire group of five SUVs stop at the top of a dune in order to allow the trucks’ engines to cool off. This also gives patrons an opportunity to take great pictures of the landscapes that surround you in three hundred sixty degrees.
The short drive to the camp is calm and peaceful and just as beautiful.
The final stop of the tour is very interesting. It is camp set up in the middle of the desert. There is hookah, henna, camel rides and sand art – all included in the tour fee. Furthermore, there is a great dinner of traditional cuisine and a fabulous show.
Another highlight of the evening is the sunset over the desert – which also helps to cool off the air temperature. It is a much-needed and appreciated reprieve from the desert heat!
