Ambergris Caye is easily one of the prettiest islands we have ever stayed on, but we almost did not make it. Our original itinerary had us staying in the Belize jungles. However, we changed our mind, made a last minute change and stayed at the beach. Who can resist the allure of palm trees, snorkeling and sunrises over the Caribbean Ocean?
We flew into Belize’s international airport, grabbed our luggage and … ummm. This is where we had a little travel hiccup. We never arranged for transportation to the island. Oops! Luckily, our rookie mistake (this was my first time using my passport, and Mike’s second) did not cost us much time or money.
You have two options: by air or by sea. We chose air.
A five minute car ride, plus a 20 minute flight beat out a 45 minutes boat ride for us. However, we met a lot of people during our trip that took the boat and loved it just as much.
That being said, here are some tips on how to get from the Belize’s mainland to Ambergris Caye via air.
—> Flights leave from the international airport and the Belize City Municipal Airstrip. We chose the later and were happy we did. No lines and great service (aaaand, Mike got to check out the airplane before we departed!).
—> Be patient and shop around. The first taxi driver to approach us offered to take us to the Belize Municipal airport for $40 USD. We declined and paid only $20 USD instead after a few minutes of waiting.
—> Pick a window seat. The views are spectacular.
—>But, if you can’t get a window seat, sit in the front row. This view is pretty good too.
—> Reserve your flight in advance to lessen your wait time and cost.
—> There are only around 10-15 flights, total, available each day. Plan accordingly.
